In light of the presidential campaign, I’ve done some extra posting about race and gender issues. I thought it might be interesting to find a quote from an African-American woman. Although there are a lot of women from whom to choose, I decided to go back a ways to Sojourner Truth, whose real name was Isabella Baumfree.
Born a slave in 1797 in upstate New York, Sojourner Truth became a celebrated preacher and anti-slavery activist. She died a free black woman in 1883 in Battle Creek, Michigan. Her life story has been an inspiration to women and African-Americans for well over 100 years.
She had plenty to say, but one quote attributed to her caught my eye, because it speaks of equality in a unique, down-to-earth, way:
“We do as much, we eat as much, we want as much.”
