Man Gene Leaves Ohio

May 16th, 2008 · No Comments

The Man Gene, its work done given the resignation of Ohio’s Attorney General amidst allegations of sex, sex, and sex harassment, has left the state.  Although it’s unclear what’s next, it could be that TMG is headed back to Detroit, where the mayor is still clinging to his office after allegations of a sexual nature against him […]

Would you hire Hillary?

May 13th, 2008 · No Comments

You have a key sales job open.  One of the applicants you interview says, “I need to be in a white territory.  The territory I have right now with my current employer has too many black people in it.  I’m someone who appeals to whites.  If you give me a white territory, I’ll make you a lot […]

Above Reproach

May 8th, 2008 · No Comments

The Office of Special Counsel is a federal agency that is supposed to handle whistleblowing complaints of federal employees.  It’s supposed to be the investigator for and of the federal government.  Instead, the head of the Office has been under investigation for about two years for, among other things, failing to investigate whistleblowing claims and […]

Poor, Poor Barbara

May 7th, 2008 · No Comments

I have made no secret on this blog of my belief that gender discrimination still exists.  I have tried to come at this subject in various ways that might make the subject be taken seriously and that might help human resources professionals deal with it practically and effectively.
I have no doubt that TV personality Barbara […]

The Reinforced Glass Ceiling

May 6th, 2008 · 8 Comments

It can’t be disputed that women have made advances in all kinds of jobs over the past few decades.  A lengthy article in the New York Times Magazine about the demise of Zoe Cruz at Morgan Stanley provides the argument that it also can’t be disputed the glass ceiling women in the C-Suite bump up against is […]

Lessons About Sex Harassment–Continued

May 5th, 2008 · No Comments

We’ve been following the somewhat bizarre developments of the sex harassment scandal in the office of the Ohio Attorney General.  (Click here, here, here and here for previous posts.)
Yesterday’s Columbus Dispatch makes even more clear what went wrong.  Not only did the Attorney General’s office try to brush aside the two complaints that eventually, excruciatingly led to the […]

Man Gene Finished in Ohio?

May 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

I wouldn’t bet on it.  An internal investigation report issued today on the sex harassment scandal in the office of the Ohio Attorney General has resulted in the firing of two employees (and close friends of the Attorney General) and the resignation of another.  (Click here, here, and here for other posts on this matter.)
But what about the Attorney General?  One […]

Can you delete a text message–forever?

May 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

In a Slate Magazine article, the above question is addressed, as it has been on this blog before.  The article focuses on the continuing trouble text messages are causing Detroit’s mayor, as well as the big picture of the title of this post.
Slate gives a maybe type answer.  If you’re smart, you’ll take my answer of […]

The Memory of an Elephant

May 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Employees have long memories.  This is especially true for union employees, as a Washington Post article reports yet another employer is learning.
Employees are on strike.  Employer wants concessions to survive.  Employees don’t buy the employer’s plea, because of promises made it the past.  It’s a timeworn story that almost never has a happy ending.

When to Quit

May 1st, 2008 · No Comments

As Senator Barack Obama is learning, Reverend Jeremiah Wright isn’t going away.  (Click here, here, and here for more.)  I continue to believe that Obama’s speech on race (delivered on March 18, 2008, and precipitated by sound bites from the Reverend’s sermons) was masterful.  One of the striking things about the speech (in addition to dealing directly […]
